AGI on Silicon - Riding on Billions of Watts
Working across media, technology, and growth strategy has taught me one thing:
markets don’t move because of products — they move because of the systems underneath.
And in 2025, nothing reveals that more clearly than the AI chip race.
Most people see Nvidia’s rise and assume it’s a story about one company powering the future. But beneath the surface, the architecture of AI compute is racing ahead, energy demand is exploding, and the economics holding it all together are tightening fast.
This year, AI didn’t just shape sentiment — it became the market’s center of gravity.

Key Highlights
⚙️ Nvidia still leads, controlling roughly 80–90% of today’s AI GPU market, but its dominance is gradually giving way as hyperscalers shift toward custom silicon and multi-architecture clusters.
🔵 Google’s TPUs are proving their value beyond Google, delivering major efficiency gains for large, predictable transformer workloads, with partners like Anthropic driving broader adoption.
🟠 AWS is reshaping cloud economics, with Trainium offering meaningful cost reductions and hybrid Trainium–Nvidia GPU clusters emerging as the default path for enterprise AI on AWS.
🚀 AMD, Intel and specialist silicon (Groq, Cerebras, Broadcom) are gaining real traction wherever cost, supply, or latency become the bottleneck — collectively tapping into a rapidly expanding multi-hundred-billion-dollar AI chip market.
🌏 China is accelerating its own chip stack, with domestic vendors filling the gap left by export controls and pushing Nvidia’s local market share down toward the 50% range.
⚡ TSMC and global energy capacity remain the true constraints — with data-center power requirements rising into the tens of gigawatts per hyperscaler, making watts as critical as FLOPs.
The Bigger Question: Can the Economics Keep Up?
AI companies are pouring trillions into data centers in the race to AGI — Artificial General Intelligence.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is the stage where AI can understand, learn, and solve problems across domains at human-level intelligence. But the economics are tightening.
IBM’s CEO Mr. Arvind Krishna warns that capex may never fully return, chips depreciate in under five years, and energy demand is outpacing national capacity.
His view is blunt: with today’s AI — current LLMs, GPUs, and scaling methods — the odds of reaching true AGI are effectively near zero. Not impossible, but close enough that he puts it at 0–1%.
Today’s models are powerful, but they aren’t built for human-level general intelligence; getting there will require a breakthrough beyond the current LLM path.
Yet he also believes today’s AI will still unlock trillions in enterprise productivity — even without AGI. That’s the paradox: markets feel light as paper planes, yet they’re being lifted by infrastructure consuming billions of watts.
What do you think?
Are we entering a decade of grounded productivity — or accelerating on belief, silicon, and borrowed energy?
♻️ Repost if you believe:
“The future won’t be shaped by AI alone — but by the energy and silicon strong enough to sustain it.”
